It's a fun, adventurous story that put me in mind of Alice in Wonderland, and has similar elements to some well-known fairytales too. The design is lovely and the artwork bright and eye-catching. I picked this book as I'm always on the lookout for new kids stories for my youngster and this has very cute graphics.

Coates is a harsh realist and an atheist, refusing to sugarcoat or mythologize the truth of what he sees, but he is also not without hope, and he finds a sense of freedom in his relentless pursuit of the truth. Coates’ life story, as well as his thoughts on American racism, the history of violence against black bodies, and the racist structures supporting “the Dream” make up most of the book’s content. Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me is an epistolary novel, written to Coates’ son, Samori, which addresses institutional racial discrimination, growing up as a black boy, black parenting, the importance of community, and police brutality, as well as the intersections of these themes. Though it is not easy, Coates gradually manages to make a successful career as a writer, all the while continuing to explore the questions that have troubled him as a young person. When he and Kenyatta are both 24, their son is born. He attends but does not graduate from Howard University, where he meets his partner, Kenyatta Matthews. Born to Paul Coates and Cheryl Waters in 1975, Coates grows up in West Baltimore during the crack epidemic, and his childhood is haunted by the dangers of the streets and by Coates’ unresolved questions about the injustices of the world, particularly those relating to the experience of black people in America. Ta-Nehisi Coates is both the author and the main character of the book, which is written in the first person and addresses Coates’ son, Samori. The locals don’t favor the couple with their business until-well, it would give too much away to talk about precipitating events, except to say that Scott has a way of being just where he’s needed in the midst of inclement weather, to say nothing of a gift for setting a good example of neighborliness. But what is it that’s remaking Scott-diabetes, cancer, a change of metabolism? It’s not for want of eating: As King writes, “One of the benefits of his peculiar condition, aside from all the extra energy, was how he could eat as much as he wanted without turning into a podge.” An adventurous palate, curiosity, and a brace of pooping pups who leave bits of themselves on his lawn put him into the orbit of a married couple, two newcomer women, who have opened a vegetarian Mexican restaurant in a quiet town in-where else?-Maine. “So far.” There’s more weight loss to come, recalling horrormeister King’s Thinner (as Richard Bachman), though without the curse. “Twenty-eight pounds,” he tells a doctor friend. He’s a big guy, clocking in north of 240 pounds, but lately the bathroom scale has been telling him something different: He looks the same, but he’s losing weight, pound after pound. King ( The Outsider, 2018, etc.) revisits a couple of familiar themes while paying heed to new realities in this elegant whisper of a story. They decide to ask Multivac, but it ominously answers with “INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR MEANINGFUL ANSWER.” The two men, Adell and Lupov, drink and discuss entropy and what will happen when the Sun runs out of energy. When Earth’s energy resources begin decreasing, Multivac comes up with a solution using the energy of the sun, allowing for the entirety of the Earth to be run on sunpower. It is “self-adjusting and self-correcting” in an almost sentient manner, and has helped mankind reach the Moon, Mars, and Venus. Multivac is a giant computer that can perform extremely complex computations beyond any human’s capability. A conversation occurs between two men, Alexander Adell and Bertram Lupov, both attendants of the Multivac. “ The Last Question,” a short story by Isaac Asimov, starts in the month of May of year 2061. Discover plot summary, useful statistics, notable quotes and more. As Adrienne Rich has written, Lorde, “for the complexity of her vision, for her moral courage and the catalytic passion of her language, has already become, for many, an indispensable poet.” Chosen Poems will provide for Lorde’s readers, both old and new, another proof of this continuing truth. “Only the worlds of Africa scrutinized in The Black Unicorn, too complex for excerpt, have been excluded.” The volume also includes seven new poems. Chosen Poems is also, Lorde says, “a linguistic and emotional tour through the conflicts, fears, and hopes of the worlds I have inhabited.” Among those worlds are such earlier books as The First Cities, Cables to Rage, From a Land Where Other People Live, New York Head Shop and Museum, and Coal. “Here are the words of some of the women I have been, am being still, will come to be,” writes Audre Lorde of this volume, in which she brings together many of the most important poems she has written over the past thirty years. |
